Biography

Since joining NCICS in 2010, Dr. Olivier Prat has worked on quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) derived from satellite, radar, and surface observations with a focus on rainfall patterns and precipitation extremes at various spatial and temporal scales. His most recent work is part of a broader effort to evaluate long-term multi-sensor QPEs with the goal of developing satellite climate data records (CDRs) for precipitation and to utilize those products to monitor climate extremes (droughts, extreme rainfall).

Dr. Prat has worked on precipitation science for more than 15 years. His work bridges theoretical modeling and observations. As a postdoctoral researcher at Duke University, he developed dynamic algorithms for the evolution of the raindrop spectra under the influence of microphysical processes to be used for satellite and radar rainfall estimation.

Dr. Prat has authored/co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He obtained a PhD in physics from the University of Montpellier II (France), a masters degree in fluid mechanics from the University of Aix-Marseille II, and an engineering degree from the Ecole Centrale de Marseille.
