Background

NOAA does not have an accurate long-term precipitation archive that has a high temporal and spatial resolution and addresses issues in the StageIV MPE product. NSSL has developed and is testing a 2nd generation QPE (called Q2) that provides 1km spatial resolution with 5min temporal resolution.

NOAA needs a central archive to for accurate, high-quality, precipitation information temporal and spatial resolutions to support local-scale climate analysis and climate monitoring. NSSL has recently agreed to develop a 3-year Q2 re-analysis in support of CI-FLOW and SECART. NCSU is working NSSL and NCDC to expand the Q2 reanalysis for provide a 10-year period of record. Year 1 of this project is focused on project initiation, transfer of technology from NSSL to NCDC, and preliminary development of the Q2 products from WSR-88D level 2 data over a pilot domain that includes the Carolinas.

Work Plan

The PI is working with staff of the Cooperative Institute for Climate Studies (CICS) to continue to develop a 10-year precipitation reanalysis over Virginia and the Carolinas using the NSSL Q2 methodology in collaboration with NSSL and NCDC. As part of this project’s continuation, NCSU proposes to continue development of the reanalysis with emphasis on product evaluation and expansion of the spatial domain to include wider geographic coverage.
